A blog is a conversation, but if your blog is not getting very many comments, the conversation can become a little quiet. But there are many ways we, as bloggers, can stir up a little more comment action on our blogs.
Show Your Appreciation
Most blogs add the nofollow tag to links in the comment by default. This is done to prevent an overload of spam. But that`s what spam plugins are for.
By removing this nofollow tag with a plugin and then announcing that you have done this, you will get a lot more comments on your blog. You have added an extra incentive. Now anyone that comments will get a true link back to their own blog, a link that will count with search engines. There is even a movement called dofollow movement created to spread the word on removing the nofollow tag.
There are various other comment plugins that make your users want to comment. The CommentLuv plugin will add a extra link, one to the last post written on the commenters blog. The KeywordLuv plugin allows commenters to add a keyword to the link back to the commenter`s blog.
Interact with Commenters
People who drop by your blog to comment are just that, people. Respond to them. Sometimes they will ask questions in comments. Sometimes they will add to your post. Sometimes they may disagree. No matter what they do, if you respond, you show that you too are also human, value feedback and are willing to do more than just write posts and walk away.
Ask for Comments
You don`t have to beg, but sometimes asking for comments works. Whether you put a graphic up that says you appreciate getting comments or you put a meesage at the end of each post asking readers to comment, it works.
Ask Questions
Admit it. You do not know everything. Sometimes you need help with a decision. Sometimes there`s a toss up between two banner designs on a new blog. Sometimes you are really not sure what your readers want. Ask. It`s that simple. And readers will comment.
Write Personal Posts
When people think you are a person, they will comment more. If they think you are a robot or a guru, they may not. By showing your personality in your posts, readers are more likely to join in the conversation.
Start a Controversy
Not always the best route, but sometimes it works. People like controversy and they will add to the conversation. You just never can be sure how they will add to it though. So what yourself when you use controversy.
Those are just a few ways that you can turn readers into commenters. But just about anything that makes your reader feel comfortable with conversing at your blog will do. And I bet you can come up with more yourself.
